The Damage Math Every MLBB Player Should Know
Physical, magic and true damage, the defense reduction formula, penetration order, and why certain items counter certain builds.

Every fight in Mobile Legends is decided by one formula: your gross damage, multiplied by how much the target's defense reduces it, multiplied by any flat damage-reduction effects on top. Once you know that formula, item choices that look arbitrary (why buy Malefic Roar here but Divine Glaive there) become obvious.
The three damage types
- Physical damage is reduced by the target's Physical Defense. Basic attacks from Marksmen and most Fighter skills deal physical damage.
- Magic damage is reduced by the target's Magic Defense. Mage skills and many Support/Tank skills deal magic damage.
- True damage ignores defense entirely. It's still reducible by flat "damage reduction" effects (a separate mechanic from defense), which is why even true damage can be softened by a general damage-reduction effect such as Queen's Wings' Demonize. Note that most defensive items are not this: Antique Cuirass reduces the attacker's physical damage specifically, so it does nothing against true damage at all.
The defense formula
Both physical and magic defense use the same conversion into "damage taken as a percentage":
- If Defense is 0 or higher:
Damage Taken % = 100 / (100 + Defense) - If Defense has been pushed below 0 by penetration or a debuff:
Damage Taken % = 2 − 100 / (100 − Defense), meaning the target now takes more than 100% of incoming damage.
At 100 Defense, a target takes exactly 100 / (100 + 100) = 50% damage. That's the number worth memorizing, because it is the point where defense has bought you a second copy of your own health bar. Going from 0 to 100 defense halves incoming damage. Going from 100 to 200 defense only takes you from 50% down to 100 / (100 + 200) ≈ 33% — a smaller absolute drop for the same 100 points spent, since defense has diminishing returns by design.
A worked example
Take a Marksman auto-attacking for 500 gross physical damage into a Tank with 150 Physical Defense and no penetration involved yet.
Damage Taken % = 100 / (100 + 150) = 40%- Actual damage = 500 × 0.40 = 200 damage
Now the Marksman buys Malefic Roar, which grants 30% Physical Penetration flat plus up to another 30% scaling with the target's defense (its Breaker passive). Against 150 defense, that scaling passive adds roughly another 15 percentage points of penetration, so total penetration lands near 45%.
- Effective defense = 150 × (1 − 0.45) ≈ 82.5
Damage Taken % = 100 / (100 + 82.5) ≈ 54.8%- Actual damage = 500 × 0.548 ≈ 274 damage
That's a 37% damage increase from one item, entirely from penetration rather than raw attack power, which is exactly why anti-tank items scale so much harder into high-defense targets than a flat attack-power item would.

Penetration vs. defense reduction, and the order they apply
These are two different mechanics that both end up lowering effective defense, and the order they resolve in matters:
- Flat defense reduction debuffs apply first (e.g., a skill that subtracts a flat amount of the target's defense).
- Percentage defense reduction and percentage penetration apply next.
- Flat penetration applies last.
This ordering means percentage penetration items like Divine Glaive (40% Magic Penetration flat, plus a scaling passive up to another 20%) get more value against targets who have already stacked a lot of defense, since a percentage cut of a bigger number is a bigger number. Flat penetration items like Genius Wand (10 flat Magic Penetration plus a stacking defense-reduction debuff) get relatively more value early, before enemies have built much defense at all, because a flat 10 points matters more against a target with only 40 defense than one with 200.
This is exactly why Malefic Roar is the standard buy against tanks: its passive percentage penetration scales directly with how much defense the target already has, so it gets stronger, not weaker, the more the enemy tank stacks armor. Divine Glaive plays the same role for mages against magic-defense-stacking targets, and is usually bought once the enemy has already invested in magic defense items, rather than as a default second item.
Adaptive attack and adaptive penetration
Adaptive Attack is a stat that converts automatically into either Physical Attack or Magic Power, depending on whichever a hero already has more of. It lets hybrid items and talents like the Common emblem's Thrill talent benefit physical and magic heroes alike without needing two separate item lines. Adaptive Penetration works the same way for penetration, converting to whichever damage type the hero's kit already leans toward, and shows up on talents like the Assassin emblem's Rupture.
CDR and movement speed caps
Cooldown Reduction is commonly capped around 40%, extendable slightly further by specific passives such as Enchanted Talisman's Magic Mastery, which raises the max CDR ceiling by 5%. Once you hit the cap, further CDR from other items is wasted, so check your total before slotting a fourth CDR source.
Movement speed has no single hard cap, but the effectiveness of slows and speed buffs diminishes once a hero's movement speed climbs well above baseline or drops well below it. In practice this means stacking movement speed past a certain point yields less and less extra kiting distance, which is one reason Rapid Boots alone (pure movement speed, no combat stat) is a situational pick rather than a default.
Attack speed, crit, and lifesteal
Attack speed increases how often a basic-attack hero swings, sourced from base stats, items like Swift Boots or Berserker's Fury, and Marksman emblem talents. Most heroes have a practical ceiling somewhere around 2.5 to 3 attacks per second, though certain passives can temporarily push effective attack speed far higher for a short window. Critical hits multiply a basic attack's damage, off a base 200% multiplier that scales up with crit-damage items like Berserker's Fury; crit chance and crit damage are separate stats and both matter for a build's total output.
Lifesteal heals a Marksman or Fighter for a percentage of physical basic-attack damage dealt; spell vamp does the same for magic skill damage. Both are reduced against turrets and minions by design, and both are the exact target of anti-heal passives, which is the connection worth remembering: every point of lifesteal or spell vamp an enemy builds is a point that anti-heal items directly cut into.
Why anti-heal exists as its own category
Lifesteal and spell vamp heal a percentage of damage dealt. Anti-heal items like Sea Halberd and Dominance Ice don't reduce incoming damage at all; they reduce the effectiveness of shields and HP regen on the target for a few seconds after being hit, which is a completely separate lever from the defense formula above. This is why a squishy hero with anti-heal can still meaningfully shut down a much tankier lifesteal Fighter: you're not trying to out-damage their effective HP, you're cutting off the sustain that inflates it.
