71 terms, each with a real example rather than a dictionary definition. If someone in chat used a word at you and you had to guess, it is probably here.

Roles

Assassin

Low-HP, high-burst class built to dive backline targets and pick off carries.

Fighter

Balanced bruiser class with flexible HP, damage, and defense.

Gold Laner

The hero — almost always a marksman — assigned to farm the gold lane.

Hyper Carry

A hero built to scale into an unstoppable late-game damage threat.

Jungler

The hero, usually an assassin, who clears jungle camps and secures objectives.

Mage

Ranged magic damage dealer, usually solo-laning mid for burst or poke.

Marksman

Basic-attack physical DPS carry, weak early and dominant in the late game.

Roamer

The tank or support who has no farm lane and instead roams the map.

Support

Utility class focused on healing, shielding, buffing, and CC for the team.

Tank

High-HP frontline hero built to absorb damage and disrupt fights with CC.

Lanes

Backdoor

Pushing or attacking enemy turrets while the enemy team is occupied elsewhere.

EXP Lane

The top solo lane where fighters farm experience for an early level lead.

Farm

Killing minions and jungle monsters for gold and experience.

Freeze

Keeping a minion wave stalled near your own turret to deny enemy farm safely.

Gank

Ambushing an enemy laner, usually with the jungler joining a lane for a kill.

Gold Lane

The bottom lane that grants bonus gold per last hit, usually farmed by a marksman.

Jungle

The area between lanes with monster camps, buffs, Turtle, and Lord.

Last Hit

Landing the killing blow on a minion, which grants the gold reward.

Mid Lane

The single center lane, usually controlled by a mage.

Roam

The fifth position: no farm lane, instead providing map-wide vision and engage.

Rotation

Moving from one part of the map to another to gank, group, or contest an objective.

Split Push

Pushing a side lane alone to force the enemy to split attention from a 5v5.

Tower Dive

Chasing a low-HP enemy under their own turret to secure a kill despite turret hits.

Wave Management

Controlling where a minion wave pushes to set up ganks, farm, or safety.

Combat

Animation Cancel

Interrupting a skill's recovery animation early to act faster than normal.

Burst

Dealing a huge chunk of damage almost instantly, often in one combo.

CC (Crowd Control)

Any effect that limits enemy action: stuns, roots, silences, slows, knockbacks.

Disengage

Abilities or effects that let a team break off from or avoid an ongoing fight.

Dive

Jumping past the frontline directly onto an enemy backline target.

Engage

Initiating a fight, usually via CC or a dive skill from a tank or assassin.

Flicker Combo

Using the Flicker battle spell to instantly close a gap or dodge a lethal combo.

Front-to-Back

A defensive fight shape with damage running from frontline to backline in order.

Initiate

The hero or skill that opens a fight, usually the first CC or dive of the engage.

Kiting

Attacking while moving so you deal damage without taking it.

Peel

Protecting a teammate from divers using CC, shields, or your own body.

Poke

Safe long-range damage used to whittle HP without committing to a fight.

True Damage

Damage that ignores physical and magic defense entirely.

Ult Combo

A coordinated sequence of ultimates timed to chain-kill or wipe a team.

Wave Clear

The ability to quickly kill a full minion wave with AoE damage.

Zoning

Using damage or CC threat to control space and deny farm or approach.

Map

Fog

The unrevealed part of the map hiding enemy heroes outside of vision range.

Lord

The late-game siege objective that pushes a lane and can nuke a turret.

Objective Control

Prioritizing Turtle, Lord, and turrets over kills, since they carry more durable value.

Respawn Timer

The delay before a dead hero returns to the map, which grows as the game goes on.

Retribution

The jungle battle spell that deals true damage to secure monsters or steal kills.

Smite Steal

Using Retribution's burst true damage to snipe an objective from the contesting team.

Turtle

Early-game jungle objective granting team-wide gold and XP.

Vision

Map awareness from wards, scout skills, and camera items used to track enemies.

Items

Adaptive Attack

A stat that converts automatically into Physical Attack or Magic Power.

Anti-Heal

Items and effects that reduce a target's healing, shield, and regen effectiveness.

Cooldown Reduction (CDR)

A stat that shortens the time before a skill or battle spell can be used again.

Lifesteal

Healing yourself for a percentage of physical basic-attack damage dealt.

Penetration

A stat that reduces an enemy's effective defense, sourced from the attacker's items.

Spell Vamp

Healing yourself for a percentage of magic skill damage dealt.

Tenacity

A stat/talent that reduces incoming damage, distinct from CC-duration reduction.

Drafting

Ban Phase

The part of draft where each team removes heroes from the pool before picking.

Counter Pick

Choosing a hero specifically because it beats an already-revealed enemy pick.

Draft

The pre-game ban-and-pick sequence where both teams select their five heroes.

First Pick

The very first hero locked in a draft, chosen before any enemy pick is known.

Pick Comp

A draft built around isolating and killing single enemies rather than 5v5 fighting.

Poke Comp

A draft built around long-range damage to force fights on favorable terms.

Ranked

MMR (Matchmaking Rating)

The hidden skill rating matchmaking uses, distinct from visible rank.

Mythic

The rank tier where sub-rank stars give way to a points-based Mythic Point system.

Mythical Glory

The rank reached at 50 Mythic Points, one tier below the top Immortal bracket.

Solo Queue

Ranking up alone, matched with four random teammates instead of a premade team.
