How to Actually Build Items in Mobile Legends

The build that wins games is not the six items you end with, it's the order you buy them in. Every hero has exactly six item slots, and every slot you fill is a slot you can't spend on something else — so the real skill in itemization is not memorizing a "best build," it's reading the game state at minute 4, minute 8, and minute 14 and buying the item that answers what's actually happening on the map.
The six-slot economy
Six slots, one of them almost always boots. That leaves five slots to split between raw damage, penetration, survivability, and utility, and none of those categories is free. A Marksman who spends all five non-boot slots on pure attack items outdamages everyone in a vacuum and dies to the first dive every single game, because nothing in the build answers crowd control, burst, or focus fire. A tank who spends all six slots on HP and defense stats contributes nothing to a fight once the enemy carry gets rolling, because raw stacked defense loses value fast against penetration items built specifically to shred it.
Think of the six slots as three purchases you always make and three you make in reaction to the enemy draft. The "always" slots are boots and one or two core damage or scaling items in your class's primary stat line. The reactive slots are counter-items: anti-heal, anti-tank, anti-burst, anti-crowd-control, whatever the enemy team is actually doing to you. A build that ignores the reactive slots isn't a "greedy" build, it's an incomplete one — it stops answering the question the enemy draft is asking.
Why build order beats final build
Two players can finish a match with the identical six items on the same hero and have wildly different games, because the order those items came online determined whether they survived to use them. Buying Divine Glaive as your second item into a lane opponent who hasn't built a single point of magic defense yet is close to wasted gold — the penetration has nothing to cut through. The same item bought as a fourth or fifth slot, once the enemy frontline has actually stacked resist, is close to mandatory. Genius Wand inverts this: it shreds the target's own Magic Defense directly, so it's strongest early, before the enemy has built up much resist to scale against, and loses relative value the later you buy it. Buying these two anti-tank magic items in the wrong order for the game state you're in is a common, quiet way to underperform without ever making an obvious mistake.
The general sequencing logic that holds across roles:
- Slot 1 — boots, upgraded to a tier-3 pair the moment the matchup is clear enough to commit (see below). Delaying boots to squeeze in more damage items is rarely correct; the movement speed alone changes how many trades you can win or avoid.
- Slots 1-2 — a core damage or scaling item in your class's primary stat, bought regardless of what the enemy is doing. Every hero needs a baseline damage identity before counter-items make sense.
- Slots 2-3 — the first reactive item, almost always anti-heal if the enemy has any sustain hero at all, because sea-halberd and glowing-wand lose most of their value the later they come online — a sustain hero who's already ahead on HP by minute 12 is much harder to punish than one you cut off at minute 6.
- Slots 3-4 — anti-tank, once the enemy frontline has visibly committed to defense items, not before.
- Slots 4-5 — anti-burst or defensive insurance, once a specific enemy combo has actually killed you or shown it can.
- Slot 6 — whatever the game state demands most by that point, often a second counter-item or the final piece of your core damage line.
This is a framework, not a script — a Gold Lane carry facing an early dive comp might need defensive itemization by slot 3, and a split-push Fighter in an uncontested lane might delay it to slot 5. The principle that doesn't change: buy items for the game you're actually in, not the build you planned in the loading screen.
Boots: the decision that shouldn't wait
Boots are the one slot almost every hero fills, and the choice between the seven tier-3 options is really a question about what's punishing you in lane.

The mistake isn't picking the "wrong" boots once — it's delaying the tier-3 upgrade because nothing in lane has forced a decision yet. By minute 6 or 7 you almost always know whether the enemy is CC-heavy, whether you're mana-starved, or whether a specific attacker is chunking you every trade. Upgrade the moment that's clear instead of carrying base boots into a fight they don't answer.
When to buy defensive items on a carry
There are two different problems a defensive item solves, and they call for different items at different points in the build.
You're dying to one specific combo. This is a burst problem — an assassin or burst mage lands a full rotation and you're dead before you can react. The answer is a burst-window item, not a slow-scaling one: Winter Crown freezes you for two full seconds on a 100-second cooldown — untargetable and immune to all damage, but unable to move or cast in that window — which voids one entire enemy engage at the cost of your own two seconds, and Athena's Shield cuts 25% of the next three seconds of magic damage the instant it triggers. Both are single-hit answers. This usually shows up as slot 4 or 5, once a specific enemy hero has actually killed you the same way twice.
You're dying over the course of a fight, not to one hit. This is a sustained-damage problem, and it calls for scaling mitigation instead of a burst window — Radiant Armor stacks Magic Defense to its cap in about two seconds of continued hits (six stacks, one every 0.4 seconds), which is the direct counterpart to Athena's Shield: buy Athena's against a burst mage's one-shot combo, buy Radiant Armor against a mage marksman or DPS caster who outlasts you in an extended trade. Immortality sits above both as pure insurance — it doesn't prevent the kill, it undoes it, reviving you 2.5 seconds later with a shield. It's the right slot-4-or-5 pick when you keep dying in the same fight window regardless of which specific ability killed you.
The counter-item table
This is the core skill of mid-to-late-game itemization: recognizing the trigger and buying the answer before it costs you the game, not after.

Most of these items lose value the longer you wait. Anti-heal bought at slot 6 has let a sustain hero heal through five items' worth of damage already; anti-tank bought before the enemy has any defense is wasted gold that could have gone into raw damage. Read the trigger, not the shopping list.
The single most common build mistake at every rank
At every rank, the most common mistake is the same one: a damage-role player keeps buying pure damage items while dying to the identical combo every fight, instead of slotting a single item that answers it. The mechanism is straightforward — a marksman or mage who is dead by the third second of a fight deals zero damage for the rest of it, so a "full damage" build that dies early actually does less net damage over a game than a build that spends one slot on Winter Crown or Immortality and lives long enough to use the other five. Below Mythic, this shows up as never adapting the build after the enemy draft locks; above it, it shows up as adapting one patch too late, buying the counter-item after the third death instead of the first. The fix isn't complicated — it's just discipline about spending one slot on the answer instead of a sixth slot on more of the same problem.
